Episode 8: Is there a WRONG way to love your kids?

Loving our kids well is one of the hardest things for a mom to do consistently.

In the day to day grind of cleaning up messes, tidying up toys, washing clothes, cooking meals, and focusing on a thousand other tasks that are all part of caring for them, is it really all that surprising that we have trouble LOVING them?

Moms easily get caught up in the task of mothering. The natural extension of that is to focus on the behavior of our children. We then react to their behavior with our attitude (be it good or bad). And then respond with a love that depends on that attitude at the moment.

Episode Scripture

A new commandment that I give you; that you love one another just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

John 13:34 English Standard Version

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9 English Standard Version

Big Picture Take Away

We are called to love our kids the way Jesus loves us – not because of what we do, but because of who we are and who we belong to. Your child and doesn’t need to earn your love with good behavior any more than you need to earn the love of Christ with yours.

Practical Application

How do you love your kids the right way?

  • We love them the right way when we show them grace when they mess up because He shows us grace.
  • We love them the right way when we show them compassion when they are hurting because He shows us compassion.
  • We love them the right way when disciplining them when they need correction because He disciplines us.
  • Most of all, we love them the right way when we apologize and ask for forgiveness when we don’t love them the right way.
