Episode 19 – What’s the deal with PRAYER anyway?

What’s the deal with prayer? Seriously, what’s the point?

Does prayer really make a difference?

How do you discern God’s answer?

What do you do when you don’t like the answer He gives you?

I’m don’t intend to mislead you by suggesting that I have tidy answers to these questions that make you feel warm and fuzzy. Because those don’t exist.

But here are the 3 things I have learned about prayer just in this last year that have helped me reconcile these questions in my head and heart.

Episode Scripture

Then the word of the Lord came to him, “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.

And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.

Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the Lord, “O Lord my God, let this child’s life come into him again.”  And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives.”  And the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.

1 Kings 17:8-9, 12, 21-24 English Standard Version

And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Luke 22:41-44 English Standard Version

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.

John 13: 14-15 English Standard Version

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Big Picture Take Away

First, Prayer is about relationship, not results.

If you want God to hear you and answer you, then you must stay in a conversation with Him. The more you talk to Him and listen for His response, the stronger your relationship becomes and the more at peace you become with His responses to your requests.

Second, prayer isn’t meant to change God, it’s meant to change you.

The stronger your relationship with God is, the more like Him you become. He hears your prayers, but your physical needs are secondary to His primary purpose for you, making you more like His son Jesus.

Third, God transforms you in the tension that exists between answered AND unanswered prayers.

God first brought both the prophet Elijah and the widow to a point of desperation so His power would be on display in the huge gap between reality and hope. He transformed their hearts right in the thick of it. And that’s where He will transform yours.
