Episode 19 BONUS- PRACTICAL Prayer Practices

Grace Over Perfection episode 19 bonus: Practical Prayer Practices. Woman praying.

In Ep 19 – What’s the point of prayer, anyway? I shared the 3 most frustrating questions we have about prayer and 3 things convictions about prayer that don’t necessarily answer them but do help us understand what the point of prayer really is.

And all that is well and good in theory, but my goal isn’t to help women look Godly women just theoretically, it is to help them live like Godly women practically.

Don’t know how to pray? This bonus episode is meant to help you establish practical prayer practices that you can actually use.

Episode Scripture

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.  Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.

2 Corinthians 12:7-8 English Standard Version

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Corinthians 12:9 English Standard Version

Big Picture Take Away

Prayer is not always peaceful.

Sometimes you will get distracted by things going on around you. Sometimes your own thoughts will interrupt you. Your prayers may end up on crazy tangents as your thoughts wander. But that’s okay. Your prayers don’t have to be perfect!

So start praying. Keep praying. Be real. Be intentional and be on the lookout for answers waiting and watching for God to move in both big and small ways. He is listening.

Practical Application

#1 Be real, pray often.

Jesus was BUSY and yet He was always praying. He never missed an opportunity to talk to His Father and neither should you. Here are two great opportunities you have in your daily life when you can pray:

  • While you are driving in your car
  • Any activity where your hands are busy but your mind isn’t necessarily occupied – folding laundry, washing dishes, yardwork, etc.

Talk to God like you are talking to your best friend. What would you say to her if you were frustrated, scared, or hurt? How would you tell her about good news or an idea you are super excited about? If she gave you a gift, how would you go about thanking her? Your prayers should sound like these conversations do, with no inhibitions.

#2 Write it out

  • Journal – Besides helping you stay focused, writing out your prayers gives you the benefit of going back later and reading what you wrote so you can see what prayers God has answered.
  • Index Cards – Grab a card and write a name on the top. Choose a bible verse that applies to that person – a need they may have, a sin they are struggling with, a hope you have for them in the future and write it on the card. Then list a few key words that help you remember what to pray about for that person. Use the back of the card to write down how you see God answering these prayers

#3 Pray God’s Word back to Him

  • Read aloud the Psalms written by David. Not sure which ones those are? No worries! Click here for a FREE PDF with the Psalms broken down in to categories that you can print and tuck into your Bible for reference.
  • Use Prayer Prompt Cards
