Episode 16 – Do you crave CONTROL?

How do you know if you crave control?

Have you ever thought (or actually said), “If I don’t get this done, it won’t get done at all.”

Or how about, “If this doesn’t get done my way, it won’t be done good enough.”

Or “If I had been in charge of this, it would have been done better.”

Have you ever gone back and redone something that someone else has done after you”trusted” them to do it?

Episode Scripture

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

James 1:14-15 English Standard Version

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Philippians 4:6 English Standard Version

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Matthew 6:25 English Standard Version

Big Picture Take Away

The Bible tells us that, as Christians, we should strive to be self-controlled and disciplined. But isn’t it just like us, imperfect moms, to take these good things to an extreme so they actually become sinful! The more I shared with other women about my need to constantly be in control of my life, the more I found that I wasn’t alone in that desire. While we didn’t all try to control our circumstances and the people in them in the exact same way, we all admitted to craving control at some level.

When you believe that you are the one that has to make sure everything works out right, what you are really saying is that God is not able to make things right. Your fear of giving up control is based on your lack of trust in God to be in control!

Practical Application

What is the solution? Since the root of needing to be in control is based on the lack of trust you have in God to deliver on His promise that He is in control, learning to trust God is where you must begin.

  1. In order to start trusting God with your future, you must look back and be thankful for the things He has done in your past. You can use a gratitude journal, an answered prayer jar, or the downloadable prayer prompt cards as tangible ways to remind you that God has provided, protected, and preserved you.
  2. When you feel yourself starting to get worked up, ask yourself, “What about this situation can I actually control and what can I NOT?” And then understand that the answer is “ME.” You can control yourself and your attitude and your actions and nothing else.
