Episode Scripture

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

James 2:14-17 English Standard Version

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.

1 Peter 4:10 English Standard Version

Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others.

Philippians 2:4 English Standard Version

Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.

1 Samuel 12:24 English Standard Version

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

Colossions 3:23-24 English Standard Version

Big Picture Take Away

The Bible preaches you are saved by faith and faith alone but what we learn from James (as well as in many other passages) is that if you are saved, it will be your natural inclination to want to do good works. In other words, if you are saved, you serve because you should want to serve.

So why don’t you always feel that way?

There are 2 reasons:

  1. Whether it is physical exhaustion, illness, or emotional weariness, there are times in your life where you cannot pour out anymore because you are drained and that is okay and it is a completely legitimate reason for temporarily stepping down from serving. Sometimes, you just need to take a break and rest up.
  2. You have been serving for the wrong reasons. And when you serve for the wrong reasons, you do it on your own strength which will eventually run out and you risk, not only burnout but bitterness.

Practical Application

4 questions you can ask That Will Help You Stop Avoiding Your Call to Serve in Ministry

  1. What does my relationship with God look like right now? I’m I spiritually empty?

So start with assessing your own heart and asking God to reveal the reality of your relationship with Him. If you know that this is where you need to start but don’t know how, then you need to check out the FREE email series, Growing Your Relationship with God in Just 5 min a Day. Sign up here.
  2. What are my gifts and talents? What resources do I have to share with others?

The Bible tells us that God has given every person gifts that He intends for them to use to His glory. Set a timer for 5 min and make a list of anything and everything you can possibly think of that you are naturally good at or physically have that you can share.
  3. What am I excited or passionate about? And what am I NOT?

What is it that you genuinely enjoy doing? Understand that you don’t have to enjoy something just because others expect you to enjoy it or be passionate about what they are passionate about. Take another 5 mins and jot down things that you really like doing in general. Then try to think about how they might be used as your serve in ministry.
  4. Where am I needed?

This is where the rubber meets the road! Find a ministry where you can share the talents & resources that you are passionate about. One doesn’t exist? Consider starting it! They don’t need you right now? Look for a ministry that does need you and pray God gives you the strength to serve for His glory even if it is not your preferred ministry until He gives you another opportunity.
