What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.James 2:14-17 English Standard Version
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.1 Peter 4:10 English Standard Version
Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others.Philippians 2:4 English Standard Version
Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.1 Samuel 12:24 English Standard Version
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.Colossions 3:23-24 English Standard Version
Big Picture Take Away
The Bible preaches you are saved by faith and faith alone but what we learn from James (as well as in many other passages) is that if you are saved, it will be your natural inclination to want to do good works. In other words, if you are saved, you serve because you should want to serve.
So why don’t you always feel that way?
There are 2 reasons:
- Whether it is physical exhaustion, illness, or emotional weariness, there are times in your life where you cannot pour out anymore because you are drained and that is okay and it is a completely legitimate reason for temporarily stepping down from serving. Sometimes, you just need to take a break and rest up.
- You have been serving for the wrong reasons. And when you serve for the wrong reasons, you do it on your own strength which will eventually run out and you risk, not only burnout but bitterness.
