Episode 12: Encouraging your kids to God’s glory, not their own

God tells us that we need to raise our children with dedication and effort, preparing them, not just for the worldly battles they will fight against in a culture that is becoming increasingly anti-Christian, but also for the spiritual battles they will encounter as the enemy fights against their pursuit of Godliness. 

As a Christian parent, your job is to point your kids’ focus upward instead of inward, but how do you actually encourage your kids to God’s glory in the middle of making sure they are fed, clothed, rested, healthy, and safe?

Big Picture Take Away

Our children will sometimes work hard and still fail to perform well. Sometimes they will be bad at something they wish they were good at. As parents, no amount of encouragement can guarantee they will experience worldly success. However, we can always encourage our kids to recognize what God is doing in them and through them.

Practical Application

Be honest with them – It is important to find a balance between encouraging your kids and helping them set realistic expectations for themselves.

Focus on the heart, not just the accomplishment – Make a point of praising your child the next time they act in a way that shows Godly character.

Sandwich correction between affirmations – Give a correction between 2 positive statements. But be careful! Corrections often outweigh compliments. So if you only ever give encouragement along with correction, your kids will start to only hear the correction.

Keep it God-centered – We can choose to tell our children that THEY are amazing OR we can choose to tell them how GOD MADE THEM amazing.
